Named after Obsius, a famous Roman who is believed to have first discovered the gemstone. It is often found in places that have experienced high volumes of volcanic activity such as Argentina, Canada, Georgia, Greece, Iceland, Japan, New Zealand...to name a few! It forms when lava cools and different environmental conditions can cause different physical forms/types. Pure obsidian tends to be very dark in colour due to the presence of magnesium and iron. The cooling rates and minerals in its environment cause different types of Obsidian to form such as Mahogany Obsidian, Snowflake Obsidian and Pumpkin Obsidian.
