Amethysts are said to be calming stone, assisting you to reach a point of serenity and helping to reduce anxieties. It is also said to be a stone of wisdom and power, helping to sharpen the mind. Perhaps the thing that is most recognised with amethyst is its ability to absorb negative energies and help create and air of tranquillity in a room.

Amethyst's name comes from the Greek word "Amethystos" which translates to non-intoxicating, as it was believed this gem stone could prevent you from getting drunk. By decorating their vessels with amethyst the Greek's could continue to drink wine without worry of inhibition. The Greek god of wine, Bacchus, was therefore honoured with amethyst, establishing its importance in society.
Further around the globe in Tibet, it was believed that monks would venture up the Himalaya's to mine this precious stone. Due to the altitude at which they found it, they therefore referred to it as the "Eye's of God" and was thought to bring good fortune to all that possessed it.
